Find it in FRM: Appartments

Soak up life in a vibrant metropolis or relax in the lush Hessen countryside. Live in a modern flat or a historical building. Choose a cosmopolitan, multicultural city or a traditional, rural town. The choice is all yours. Thanks to the short routes through our region, you can easily commute between towns or cities.

Frankfurt am Main, Wiesbaden and Mainz are the most populous cities of the FrankfurtRheinMain (FRM) region. Many people living in these and other cities rent an apartment. Around 50% of Germans live in rental apartments. There are many commercial real estate properties on the internet that will help you find suitable accommodation. Although most adverts are published online nowadays, a browse through the classified sections of regional newspapers can be worthwhile, too. Private landlords tend to advertise there. Alternatively, you can hire a professional real estate agent who will find an apartment for you. Of course, this service comes at a price.

Housing models

There are more options than just regular apartments, which are normally inhabited by singles, couples or families. Especially large university cities such as Frankfurt am Main, Wiesbaden, Mainz or Darmstadt offer alternative housing models.

  • If you are only staying for a short period of time, you can rent a furnished apartment.
  • Many young professionals and students in Germany choose to flat-share. In German, this arrangement is called a “Wohngemeinschaft” (WG). Several people live in one apartment; they each rent their own room but share a communal kitchen and bathroom. Not only is this an economic option, it can also help you meet people and practise your German in your everyday life. You can use the internet to look for free rooms in shared apartments. There are websites dedicated to finding a WG.
  • Students also have the option of renting a dormitory room. Please contact your university to find out more.

Prices

Rent all over the world have been rising over the past years. Unfortunately, the FrankfurtRheinMain region is no exception. But compared to other metropolises, its prices are still quite reasonable. Please click here for a detailed overview of rental prices in FRM.

As a general rule: the further away a house or apartment is from the city centre, the more affordable it is. Thanks to the well-developed infrastructure and the extensive public transport network, you can commute to your workplace or university easily. Rural areas allow you to enjoy life in nature, but still give you easy access to everything our vibrant cities have to offer.

Excellent residential area

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) has awarded the title of “Excellent residential area for specialists and executives” to more than 40 municipalities in FRM. These towns will welcome you and your family with open arms. They offer special services for international professionals, such as multilingual information material, helpful childcare options and personal advisors.
