Darmstadt, Frankfurt am Main, Mainz and Wiesbaden are the most populous cities of the FrankfurtRheinMain (FRM) region. In these and in other towns it is common to rent an apartment. Around 50% of Germans live in rented apartments. The best place to find suitable accommodation is on the internet on one of the many commercial websites. Although most adverts are published online nowadays, it is still worth having a look at the classified ads sections of regional newspapers where you will find adverts from private landlords. Alternatively, you can ask a professional real estate agent to look for an apartment for you. However, this service comes at a price.

Housing Models

As well as the standard apartments which are occupied by singles, couples and families, there are completely different housing models, in particular, in the large university cities such as Darmstadt, Frankfurt am Main, Mainz and Wiesbaden.

  • If you are only coming for a short period of time, you can rent a furnished apartment.
  • Many young skilled workers and students live in a shared flat in Germany, a „Wohngemeinschaft” (WG). In this model, several people share the apartment. They each rent their own room but share a communal kitchen and bathroom. This is very good value and will make it easier to meet people and practise your German day to day. You can find free rooms in shared apartments on dedicated websites online.
  • Students also have the option of renting a dorm in student accomodation. You can contact your university for more detailed information.
