Activities for Families

Are you looking for something to do with your children? FrankfurtRheinMain (FRM) has a wide range of outings for families. Here we would like to show you a few interesting activities.

Parents and children love zoos, where you can discover a wide variety of animal species. In FRM, there are three large zoos as well as the smaller wildlife parks.

Frankfurt Zoo is located in the centre of the city. Here, all year round, you can find more than 500 species from all over the world, as well as learning about the animals and how they are being protected.

In Kronberg im Taunus there is the Opel-Zoo with over 200 species in spacious enclosures. The Opel-Zoo is particularly well known for its African elephants, giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, and gnus. If you are brave enough, you can even ride a camel here. Otherwise, the adventure playground and interactive activities will ensure that you have a fun-filled day.

Darmstadt is home to the Vivarium – a zoo which mainly specialises in the breeding and conservation of amphibians, reptiles and fish. However, here you can also see different types of monkeys up close.

If you like, you can also take your children on a journey back in time.

The Saalburg in the Taunus is an old Roman fort that was reconstructed over 100 years ago. In the exhibition area you can admire the archaeological finds and discover how the Romans protected their borders using the Saalburg. Exciting guided tours and a range of activities, such as javelin throwing and archery, bring the Roman era back to life.

At Hessenpark you and your children can learn how people used to live and work in Germany. In this open-air museum, more than a hundred original houses have been reconstructed. Crafts from the period and agricultural life are portrayed in authentic costumes at various demonstrations and events. At the end you can round off your visit by doing some shopping in the market square.

Besides this, there is a lot more for children to discover in FrankfurtRheinMain. You will find an overview on the FrankfurtRheinMain website and more suggestions under ‘Find it in FRM: Recreation in Nature’.

Glauberg is a very special place that was inhabited by mankind as far back as the Neolithic Age. Excavations from three Celtic tombs from the 5th century BC and the statue of a Celtic ruler found here are unique, and are recognised throughout the world as an archaeological sensation.

The museum is part of the Celtic World at the Glauberg, which also houses a research centre and a large archaeological park. In the park there is a reconstruction of a burial mound, a mysterious system of banks and ditches, and fortifications from the early Celtic period. Remains from other historical periods can be found on the Glauberg plateau.

The Opel Zoo is located on the slopes of the Vordertaunus between Kronberg and Königstein. It showcases around 1,600 animals from over 230 different species in a unique way. These include the only elephants in Hessen, giraffes, zebras, meercats, red pandas, cheetahs, kangaroos and many more. The grounds of the zoo cover 27 hectares, and from the circular paths and nature trails you have a good view of the various enclosures, as you normally would only have in the wild. The attractive enclosure, which was constructed for the African penguins in 2016, enables you to observe the animals underwater through large glass windows.
