Family activities

Are you looking for something to do with your children? FrankfurtRheinMain (FRM) has a wide range of family outings for you. We’d like to introduce a few exciting activities to you here.

Zoos are especially popular with parents and children – places where a wide variety of species can be discovered. In FRM, besides the smaller wildlife parks, there are three large zoos:

Frankfurt Zoo is located in the centre of the city. Here you can find more than 500 animal species from all over the world all year round, as well as inform yourself about the animals and how the species are being protected.

The Opel-Zoo in Kronberg in Taunus hosts more than 200 species in spacious enclosures. The Opel-Zoo is especially well known for its African elephants, giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, hippos and gnus. If you dare, you can even ride a camel there. Besides this, the adventure playground and interactive activities will ensure that you have a fun-filled day.

Darmstadt is home to the Vivarium – a zoo specialising mainly in the breeding and conservation of amphibians, reptiles and fish. However, you can also have a close encounter with various species of ape there.

If you like, you can also take your children on a journey through time.

The Saalburg in the Taunus is an old Roman fort that was reconstructed over 100 years ago. In the exhibition area you’ll marvel at the archaeological finds and discover how the Roman frontier was defended by the Saalburg. Exciting guided tours and a range of activities, such as javelin throwing and archery, bring the Roman era back to life.

In the Hessenpark you and your children can experience how people lived and worked in Germany in the past. In this open-air museum more than a hundred houses have been constructed in the original style. Presentations and events feature crafts from the period and portray agricultural life in authentic costumes. Afterwards, you can complete your visit with some shopping at the market place.

Beyond this, there's much more for you and your children to discover in FrankfurtRheinMain. For an overview visit Tourismus FrankfurtRheinMain. You’ll find further ideas under ‘Find it in FRM: outdoor recreation’.
