Professional development and further education

Professional development programmes can help you expand the skills that you have already acquired outside of Germany. They can give you new qualifications that are in demand on the German market. You might even need to attend a professional development programme to work, e.g. if your own qualifications are not recognised (or only partially recognised) in Germany. In either case, professional development can improve your career prospects.

Professional development programmes often take the form of seminars or courses. Besides professional development programmes, there are also general further education options. The former expands your previous training or brings your skills up to date. This allows you to keep up with the latest developments in your field. It increases your chances of advancing your career and improving your income. General further education options primarily benefit your personal development.

Professional development

Professional development programmes expand or deepen your existing vocational skills and qualifications. In some occupations, this is a necessity and standard practice. This applies to teachers, doctors and lawyers, for example, as it keeps their professional skills up to date. In other occupations, the necessity of professional development is less common, but no less important. Professional development improves your chances of a promotion and your future prospects: qualified professionals are less likely to be unemployed.

There are different types of professional development programmes: further training, retraining, additional qualifications, in-service training, e-learning and many more. Some programmes award you with a recognised qualification in the corresponding profession upon successful completion. Some are simple training measures that will issue a certificate of participation. The duration of the different types of programmes can vary widely. They can take a single day, several days or even one to two years. Longer programmes are often in-service, i.e. you attend them while also working full time. Please seek individual advice to find the best option for you.

If you are employed, your employer might pay for your professional development. If you are unemployed, the Employment Agency (Agentur für Arbeit) may provide financial support.

General further education

General further education options include language courses, media skills, health-related programmes, cultural education, teamwork skills and similar “soft skills”. Rather than providing a professional qualification, they support your personal development and teach you social skills. Further educational options can still improve your employment opportunities: soft skills are very important in professional life.

You normally have to pay for your further education yourself, as these programmes are not funded.

The FrankfurtRheinMain (FRM) region is full of opportunities. Professional development and further education programmes are available in FRM.
