You probably know Frankfurt am Main as an international finance centre. The European Central Bank, German Federal Bank and numerous national and international banks have their headquarters here. Financial and insurance services are more important in the Metropolitan Region of FrankfurtRheinMain than in any other German metropolis. Wiesbaden is home to insurance companies and pension funds, and the German Stock Exchange has its headquarters in Eschborn. For several years the number of fintechs, financial start-ups, has been increasing.


Consulting

The consulting sector offers knowledge-based services aimed at businesses, and the demand for qualified skilled workers with consultancy know-how is growing. The 50 most important consulting companies in the world are located in FrankfurtRheinMain. In total, there are more than 17,000 companies in the consultancy sector with almost 225,000 employees. The proximity to the financial markets and the availability of office premises make FRM an attractive location. Alongside large international corporations, regional companies generally specialise in consulting services for local clusters, such as logistics, finance, and information and communications technology (ICT). Logistics and Transport

Centrally located, in the heart of Europe, the Metropolitan Region of FrankfurtRheinMain is one of the most important international hubs. Frankfurt Airport, which handles more than 60 million passengers per year, is Germany’s largest commercial airport. It is also the largest cargo airport in continental Europe. The Frankfurt motorway junction, Frankfurter Autobahnkreuz, is the busiest junction in Germany and at the region’s railway stations, all of the major passenger and freight transport train lines meet. Traditionally, the Metropolitan Region of FrankfurtRheinMain has always been an important location for the chemical industry and home to strong global players. Alongside subsiduaries of international companies, five of the twenty largest chemical companies in Germany have their headquarters in FRM, most of them to the south of the region. Information and Communications Technology

With its outstanding digital infrastructure, the Metropolitan Region of FrankfurtRheinMain is an important location for information and communications technology (ICT). It hosts the world’s largest internet hub, the second largest number of data centres in Europe and some very well-developed broadband networks. Many ICT companies here supply the main players in the logistics, finance, consulting and healthcare industries with ICT services and software development. The most important centres are Mainz, Bad Homburg, Darmstadt and Eschborn. Cultural and Creative Industries

These companies have a strong global presence. In particular, two European institutions in Darmstadt are extremely important: the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) and the European Meteorological Satellite Organisation (EUMETSAT). Other major companies are located in Frankfurt, Raunheim and Oberursel. 28,500 employees work in the aerospace industry in the region.


Environmental Technology and Energy

The environmental technology and energy sector is growing in the Metropolitan Region of FrankfurtRheinMain. It can be found in almost every field of industrial manufacturing, from engineering firms that manufacture solar cells, turbines and engines; energy, water and waste management to the wholesale of waste and scrap. Alongside companies, this cluster also includes a variety of initiatives, networks and associations with many different focal points. Research and development is conducted in the fields of chemistry, physics, biology, and electrical and mechanical engineering at the universities in the region, for example at the Energy Center of the TU Darmstadt.


Healthcare

Demographic changes and technological progress are leading to the healthcare sector becoming increasingly important. It offers opportunities for growth and job security. Around 357,000 employees already work in the Metropolitan Region of FrankfurtRheinMain in this cluster. The large pharmaceutical companies are the main employers. Automotive

The automotive industry is one of the leading industries in the Metropolitan Region of FrankfurtRheinMain. This is steeped in tradition, as for over 100 years a notable German car manufacturer has had its headquarters in Rüsselsheim. Many suppliers and service providers, as well as engineering firms, are established nearby. In general, many of the 108,000 employees in this cluster work in upstream automotive production, i.e. in design, research and development. In particular, Japanese and Korean car manufacturers have their research and development centres in FRM.


Material Technology

Innovations in this field are very important to many other industries, for instance by using resources in a more efficient and sustainable way. Germany is the European leader in the field of nanotechnology, and around 96,000 employees work in this cluster in the Metropolitan Region of FrankfurtRheinMain. It is worth noting the hidden champions, companies which are scarcely known to the public, but are global market leaders in their field. In FRM, these companies are mainly found to the east of the region in Hanau and the Main-Kinzig-Kreis.


Automation

The automation industry is one of Germany’s most innovative industries. It includes electrical, mechanical and plant engineering, energy and environmental technology, and robotics. 140,000 employees work in more than 4,000 companies in the automation cluster in the FrankfurtRheinMain region.
