German for Work

Doing a good job or finding a good job – you will have much better prospects if you speak and understand German. Everyday language is different from the language at work and in FrankfurtRheinMain (FRM), there are German courses specifically for work.

There are a variety of attractive job opportunities for newcomers in the FRM region, for some even basic minimal German language skills are sufficient. But for others, advanced German language skills of at least C1 are required, this is especially the case when there is direct contact with German clients. The most important occupational groups here are the pedagogical-educational sector and the medical sector. Especially in medical professions such as nurses, physiotherapists, pharmaceutical assistants or speech therapists, a very good knowledge of German and the technical terminology are of enormous importance.

At work you will often need specific words and phrases that you might not use every day eg. for internal communications within a company, to understand or give instructions, and for business emails and letters. It is not easy to differentiate this in a foreign language. At the German courses designed specifically for work purposes, you will learn vocabulary which is used in the work environment.

Vocational German language courses have been sponsored by the government since 2016.  In order to qualify, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You are looking for a job or vocational training course, or are in the process of having your vocational qualifications recognized.
  • Your level of German is B1, B2 or C1.

Do you already have a job but are still having issues in your day-to-day work due to inadequate knowledge of German? Then you can also take a course. However, either you or your employer must pay half of the costs.

Contact your local Agentur für Arbeit (Employment Agency) for information on job-specific German courses. More information can be found on the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) website.

One key provider in FRM of German courses specifically for work is the Internationaler Bund Sprachzentrum Frankfurt.
