We will continue on our journey. In the next few days and weeks we would like to invite you to join us on a journey along the Main River. Last week we started in Aschaffenburg. Today we will be travelling on to Hanau.

Hanau is the sixth largest city in Hessen with around 96,000 inhabitants and is located at the junction of the river Kinzig and the Main, about 30 km from Frankfurt.

The Brothers Grimm City

Hanau is also called the Brothers Grimm City. The brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were born in Hanau in the 18th century and grew up there. They later became world-famous for their "Children's and Household Tales" and worked on the "German Dictionary", the largest and most comprehensive dictionary of the German language.

As well as the national monument to the Brothers Grimm and the annual Brothers Grimm Festival, Hanau also has a fairy tale trail. Ten sculptures of fairy tale figures can be seen in Hanau's city centre, e.g. Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty or Puss in Boots. Of course, there is also a museum, the GrimmsMärchenReich, where you can immerse yourself in the fairytale world of the Grimms.

But Hanau also has more to offer: The German Goldsmiths’ House is an old half-timbered building in the middle of the city with exhibitions on the art of goldsmithing. Or the Hessen Doll and Toy Museum - not only exciting for children, but also for all toy fans who are still young at heart!

Those who prefer to spend the day in the countryside are welcome in Wilhelmsbad. It is one of the most popular local recreation destinations in FrankfurtRheinMain (FRM). The historic buildings are surrounded by an extensive beautifully landscaped park.

Of course, the Main also invites you to take a walk along the river. In fact, Hanau has the second largest port along the Main. And the biggest? That is the Frankfurt Osthafen.

We will continue our journey to Offenbach. Have fun discovering Hanau!
