Today is the nationwide Girls' Day and Boys'. On this day, companies all over Germany open their doors for young people in order to learn more about various vocational training professions. The concept especially aims at introducing jobs to girls and boys in which they have been underrepresented so far.
The majority of young people in Germany is not fully exploiting their career opportunities. Girls still choose "typically female" professions and choose from only ten different vocational trainings, such as business administrator / retail saleswoman, medical assistant and shop assistant. The Girls Day intends to encourage girls to orientate themselves in areas such as MINT professions (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology) and science. At the same time, the Boys' Day takes place on this day and is intended to give boys the opportunity to learn about areas in which too few men are still working, e.g. in the social, educational and nursing fields.
Girls' Day and Boys' Day clearly show their effect. In recent years there has been a strong increase in women in MINT professions and around 20% of companies subsequently receive applications from Boys' Day participants.
